How to Use Dumbbells

Working out with free weights is the best form or resistance training exercise. Free weights are more effective than machines in developing strength, lean muscle mass, and muscle tone. For someone who is new to exercise, learning how to use dumbbells is crucial for the proper execution of dumbbell exercises. If you do not know how to effectively workout with dumbbells, you won’t receive the maximum benefits of free weight training. Here are some tips to help you learn how to exercise with dumbbells:

Control

Always control the dumbbells. A common mistake beginners make is that they use momentum to move the dumbbells, and you’ll see them swinging the weights. Not only is this not effective to exercise your muscles, but it is also dangerous to the individual working out and the people around them. Utilize proper control during the exercise by slowly moving the dumbbells.

Posture

One reason why people swing the dumbbells is that they’re using their backs to move the weight. Especially with dumbbell curls, beginners often move their upper bodies before performing the curling movement. Keep your upper body straight and maintain a solid posture during all exercises with dumbbells to prevent injury and receive a more effective workout.

Breathing

As a rule of thumb, exhale when your muscles are contracting, and inhale as your muscles expand. Improper breathing, or worst, not breathing at all during the exercise is a no-no. You can get tired a lot quicker during the exercise if you do not breathe properly, and you can even pass out during your set. It may take a while to get used to the breathing during your dumbbell workouts, but after some practice it will become second nature to you.
