Dumbells: The Importance of Full Range of Motion

dumbbells

Working out with dumbells is the most effective means of building size and strength. A common mistake many weight lifters do when performing their dumbell workouts is not using a full range of motion during their exercises. Some individuals neglect using proper exercise technique and full range of motion during a dumbbell exercise and are only concerned with the weight they are lifting.

If you train with dumbbells without using a full range of motion (i.e. partial repetitions), you will end up developing short and tight muscles. Since a limited range of motion is used during the dumbbell exercise, your muscles do not receive the natural stretch, thus becoming tighter. This can lead to injury and a “stiff” posture common to many bodybuilders.

Additionally, exercising with dumbbells in such a small range during partial reps makes you stronger specifically in that range.
