The Dumbbell

The dumbbell is a exercise equipment used in free weight training. These weights usually come in pairs, and each dumbell is held in one hand.

The discovery about the devices used to ring church bells causing an increase in muscle size was made in Tudor England in the 16th century. This caused a movement of affluent young men installing a pulley with a weight rope device in their home. This device mimicked the weights used to ring a church bell.

Over time, this device was replaced by weights, and by the 19th century, the symmetrical shape of the dumbbells emerged (2 equal weights attached to a handle on each side).

Today, there are fixed weights dumbbells and adjustable dumbbells (otherwise know as quick change dumbbells).

Dumbbells are versatile and can be used with all types of strength training. Lifting weights with dumbbells is an effect form of exercise.
